Recap on my learning project journey! At the beginning of all of this, I was not sure if creating cards was going to be something that I would continue to do after this class was over. However, over the last 11 weeks I have had a lot of fun challenging myself and developing my card making skills. In the past I usually just used my Cricut machine to help with developing bulletin boards or decor for my classroom, as well as a vinyl craft here or there. Now, I feel way more comfortable with using my Cricut machine for more paper crafts like card making, drawing, gift tags, and layered paper designs. I also got the opportunity to play around with some different materials that I had never used before like sticky paper, cut away cards, varying thicknesses of card stock and pens. I think this experience was really valuable, it showed me how many options I had for learning a new skill through using technology and allowed me to discover different content creators that I can pull ideas and inspiration from! This project also gave me the opportunity to develop a new hobby that I hope continue once this class is over. This Weeks Final Task!
Putting the pieces togetherOnce all the pieces were cut I started to fold all the score lines for both the envelope and the card. Once everything was pre-folded I then glued the liner inside the envelop. I smoothed it out with my roller and then started gluing the wings of the envelope so that I could close it up. Once the envelope was assembled I moved onto the card. I had some cute heart patterned card stock that I decided to use as the background and then glued that onto the inside of the card so that you couldn't see through the stencil anymore. After that was all attached I had a finished card and envelope and the card fit PERFECTLY into the envelope.
All in all, this was a fun final project! I really enjoyed making an envelop and it was a lot easier than I expected. I think I will need to grab larger card stock though for making envelopes because the 8.5x11 pages I have just won't work if I want to make anything other than a mini card as this card turned out really little! Thanks so much for following along with me on my card making journey! I hope you enjoyed my little project as much as I did! Using our Virtual Discord Community
Through the discord chat I was also able to learn some new skills and tips for common used apps. For example, I love Canva and Robyne had shared a creation she had made using Canva with animated images, this was something I had never done with Canva before so it was cool to be able to learn this new skill while also providing feedback to a peer on their project! Being able to collaborate in a safe space was such a wonderful part of this class! Learning from Others!I think one of my favourite parts about this class was getting to look at other people's learning projects each week! It was so exciting to see what other people came up with, what they were doing and watch their growth and development! I also felt like I was learning along side my peers sometimes. I even felt inspired by a few of them! For example, at the end of October I read Amie's post "Using a Netflix Show to Learn French?", she talked about watching a show called "Emily in Paris" and how she was picking up on some of the words and learning a bit of French from watching the show. I had just started watching that show when I read her post and that day I had decided I wanted to try and learn French for fun too, so, I started using Duolingo and now, after a month of practice, I am starting to pick up on some things too. I feel like seeing Amie do and make a connection to a show I was watching inspired me to give it a try too! Some other really cool things I learned along the way was learning some new recipes, learning about other cultures, learning about some new teaching tools, finding out more about ASL, and getting some new crafting inspiration! I also really enjoyed reading/commenting on the blogs of others over the weeks because it opened my eyes to new perspectives and understandings of topics like AI, Digital Literacy & Identity, Cyber Bullying and technology in the classroom. Sharing what I know!I also enjoyed receiving comments on my learning project and getting the opportunity to share my growth and have others be able to offer words of encouragement, advice and praise. I feel like having people check in with my project and comment made me take a lot more pride in what I was doing. I felt validated for learning a skill like card making and it has pushed me to challenge myself each week with a new task! Through my own personal blog I was also able to share what I know with others when they had questions for me as well as hopefully inspire others to explore their creative side and try something new! I had a lot of people commenting on my blog that have a Cricut machine but, like me, had never used it for card making and other paper crafts. It was cool to share some new ideas/creations with others and help them find some content creators that may be able to help them in their creating journey if they decide to give it a try!
12/2/2024 0 Comments Week 10 - A Majestic CreationTrying to find inspiration...This week I STRUGGLED to find something I wanted to create. The teacher tired has hit hard and I feel like I have not had a lot of energy to complete anything, let alone a card. However, I decided that getting crafty might be a nice break for my mind and so, I started to browse some different card ideas. This week I decided to use a Cricut Creation right off of design space, however, that proved to be difficult as well. I think I went through 4 different possible card designs before I landed on the one I created this week. While it was more on the basic side I think this card turned out SO cute! As someone who has a few littles in my life, this is a great card template for one of their birthdays! So, without further ado, this weeks creation is a Majestic Unicorn Card! The Creation Process
Reflection of this weeks project…I liked how easy this whole process was. It was a different style of card but not necessarily too challenging or complex but still looks great! I definitely think I will continue to try making some different kinds of character cards (I saw a Spider Man one that I totally want to try some time!) If I were to make this one again I think I would add more drawn details on the card (maybe some little flowers or sparkles) just to give it an extra pop!
My Experience with AII honestly do not have a lot of experience with AI, there's been maybe one or two times I have used chat GPT just to play around with it or see what it is all about but honestly, I have always been someone who likes doing their own work (school wise and work wise) and do not often want to pawn it off on technology. AI is really intimidating to me, and it is still so new. I feel like it is not something I have looked into or experimented in enough to have the desire to use it and I also just don't have the time to sit down and play around with it to see if it is something that I could potentially use. AI in Education
SO... Can AI be used to support learners and teachers?!I have no doubt in my mind that AI will continue to evolve and become more helpful for both teachers and students. Just by looking through some of the tools I can see how AI can provide new learning opportunities for students that can push them to try new things and explore things creatively (ex: there is lots of potential when it comes to giving students art projects for develop AI generated drawings. visual representations, music, and videos). However, I do not know if it is something that I see myself personally using in my teaching practices. I find it a bit impersonal and tricky to navigate. I can absolutely see the benefits that can come from using AI for developing ideas or approaches for behaviour and education plans for student needs as well as for creating lesson plans and different engaging activities for our students. It can totally help teachers to keep things interesting without having to totally "reinvent the wheel" for every lesson or project they want to do. But like I also said above, at times it feels impersonal and AI may not fit with everyone's teaching styles or student needs. Personally, I do not feel like I know enough about AI to really unlock the potential that it has and I do not feel like I could be bothered to sit down and learn how to use it on my own. If I saw that there was a professional development opportunity to learn more about using AI for teaching I would take the chance to learn more but I don't think it is something that I am going to use on a regular basis.
This weeks inspiration:This week I decided I wanted to try and make a card with a 3-D inside. But I wasn't sure if I wanted to make another Christmas card or go back to Birthday cards... BUT then I thought about my best friend and how she is expecting and her baby shower is in a couple of weeks. So, I decided why not kill two birds with one stone and use this weeks learning project to create a card for her baby shower! I started with finding this weeks inspiration... I found a creator named Kristi and she has a blog named SVGnation. Her blog is dedicated to Cricut crafts for both beginners and advanced crafters! She offers free cheat sheets for Cricuting as well as countless different craft ideas from cards and other paper crafts to wood work and Holiday themed crafts. She also offers pre made SVG files to help make crafting easier! It is definitely a blog that I will continue to follow and pull ideas from in the future. Going through the steps

This Weeks Finished Product!!!!11/24/2024 2 Comments Digital Literacy for YoungstersWhat should we teach our young ones? For a long time I had this idea that teaching digital literacy was for middle years and high school students. You know, the ones who often have their own tech (like phones, laptops, gaming systems & tablets), however, the more I learn about digital citizenship and digital literacy the more I realize that we need to be teaching these skills to our youngsters as well! With technology becoming more and more accessible for all, we need to start teaching and preparing our students for the digital world they are walking into. First things first, it is important to define what digital literacy is. Digital literacy has to do with the ability to understand and use information from digital technologies, such as computers, phones, and the internet. It is an essential skill for children of all ages in today’s world. When it comes to teaching about Digital Literacy some things we should be teaching the younger grades (1-3) include:
Connecting to the CurriculumGrade 1 Curriculum Connections: Looking at the grade 1 health curriculum you would be able to tie digital literacy into developing healthy relationships with technology (as well as others through a virtual space), also developing a healthy sense of self when it comes to their digital identity. It can also be taught through showing students how to safety navigate technology through healthy decision making. Finally, we can begin to teach students that everyone is made differently and we do not need to compare ourselves to others (both in person and through the use of technology). Digital literacy can also be connected to the Power & Authority Social Studies 1 outcome where you can use different problem solving and peacemaking strategies when issues arise online. Grade 2 Curriculum Connections: Through the grade 2 curriculum teachers can connect digital literacy to the health curriculum by teachers helping students understand how unsafe technology use can affect thoughts, feelings and actions that can in turn affect their health. You can also teach students about digital respect of both themselves and others. Digital literacy can also be connected to grade 2 Social Studies through teaching them rights and responsibilities. For example, people have the right to have access to technology, however, it is also their responsibility to use it properly and not abuse it by being unsafe, treating others with disrespect or allow technology to affect ones health. It can also be connected to guiding change, for example, teaching students to be positive and healthy users of technology which in turn can teach others to behave that way online as well. This week I decided to get into the Christmas Spirit and make a Christmas Card! I found a blogger named Abby Kirsten Collections and used her post named "How to Make Christmas Cards with Cricut - DIY Card Templates" to help me with my learning project! I really enjoyed looking through her website and seeing all of the different projects she shares (not just ones that use the Cricut!) It has definitely been a pretty cool experience checking out different creators both on Youtube and through their blogs (if they have one). It has given me a lot of inspiration for DIY crafts and cards that I could make in the future!
Step 1 - Design Space
Step 2 - Cutting and Assembling the Card!
Reflection from this weeks card:This week was a lot of fun and I can definitely see myself making more cards like this for all different occasions. Something I really enjoyed was how simple the process was to create it yet it looks so beautiful when it was all put together! The designs can be endless for this style of card which is also very cool. Something that I did not love about this process was using the glitter card stock. It looks so pretty and really makes the card POP, however, it is not the easiest material to work with (likely because it is so thick). Next time I try something like this I will maybe try a patterned or textured card stock to still make the base of the card stand out and be eye catching but I do not know if I will continue to use glitter card stock unless I can find some that is not as thick as the one I used!
11/11/2024 1 Comment Week 7 - Give that Card a Shake!!
The Creation Process:I followed the video step-by-step on how to develop the different layers. I decided to make the bottom layer big enough to fold in two to make the main card base (5.5 in tall by 8.5 in wide). Then, chose my balloon shape, duplicated them so there was 3, layered them and adjusted their size and then "welded" them together (this makes the shape be open on the inside but gives the online of multiple balloons side by side). Then I had to select the "slice" option to the shape out of the top layer so that it would cut the balloon shape out of the card stock. I duplicated that layer a few more times so that I could layer the card stock and made the gap deeper for the glitter to fit in. I also had to choose a banner and font to write the "happy birthday" message and resize it to fit on the card template. Once everything was completed on the design space as per the video's instruction I moved to the cutting stage.
What might I do differently next time?
